In-person only
event!
Come join the Children and the Law
Section in an in-person end-of-the-bar-year event at the MSBA offices in
conjunction with our annual meeting to complete nominations to and voting on
Section Council membership for the 2023-2024 bar
year.
Following a brief reception, we will
view together a documentary entitled “Thugs: The Criminalization of Black
Youth,” created by filmmakers Taylour Redmond and Emani Labon. This film (trailer)
explores the control of Black people through the “New Jim Crow” of systematic
racial profiling, arrest, and incarceration, specifically as it affects Black
youth. The documentary features the story of Myon Burrell, a person who was
falsely accused of murder at age 16 and imprisoned for 18 years in Minnesota.
The film is approximately 45 minutes in length and we engage in a brief
conversation with the filmmakers who are joining us for the
evening.
