Author Guidelines
The following guidelines are intended to assist authors in preparing articles for publication in The Hennepin Lawyer.
Submission of Material
The Hennepin Lawyer Committee encourages material for publication from Hennepin County practitioners.
We strive to publish articles of interest to the practicing bar, with a slant or focus pertaining specifically to the law or lawyers of Hennepin County. Topics could include:
• Practice area insights/updates, including recent changes or proposed changes in the law
• Attorney ethics
• Increasing diversity and eliminating bias in the profession
• Working with clients or attorneys
• Legal marketing, practice pointers, or tech tools
• Wellness and work/life balance
• Career support and guidance
• Challenges/rewards of working in your area of law or your size/type of firm
• Reviews of legal-themed or professional development books
• HCBA members doing interesting things (personally and professionally).
We rarely accept articles that have already been published.
The HCBA has the right to refuse any article for publication.
Queries
An editorial calendar is typically prepared 2-3 months ahead. Authors are encouraged to explore possible editorial interest in a subject before expending significant time and effort preparing a complete article. Potential authors should contact Managing Editor Elsa Cournoyer at ecournoyer@mnbars.org.
Length of Articles/Format
Articles should be 800 to 2,000 words in length (3-7 double-spaced pages).
Approved articles should be submitted as Word documents to thl@hcba.org.
Footnotes
Necessary citations, if any, should be placed as endnotes. Citations should be kept to a minimum, with second references incorporated in the text in informal reference more suitable to our magazine format than a law journal approach. The author must carefully cite-check references.
Pictures and Biographies
Prospective authors should submit a recent photograph (executive-style head shot) and a short bio paragraph (2-3 sentences) to accompany the article. Please include current employment, and an indication of any affiliation or bias that may pertain to the content of the article.
Deadlines
Production schedules are set in advance and late articles create challenges. Articles should be submitted no later than 15 days prior to publication date.
Editorial Review
Includes grammar, punctuation, readability, and consistency of style. Significant editorial changes will typically be cleared with the author in advance or publication. “Accepted” articles are not guaranteed publication in any particular issue.
Articles should be submitted to thl@hcba.org.
