Law Day 2024: Honorable Mention Essay

By David L.

Cops are not as great as they sound in society. A minority of cops abuse their power and use unnecessary force against civilians. The issue that has happened to many people in America is police brutality, due to how they abuse their power and how they use it recklessly.

A minority of cops use unnecessary force on a citizen even though they are not resisting and sometimes are pointed by a gun from a cop even though the person does not possess a weapon to threaten the cop. With the body cam on cops they can just turn the cam off when confronting an innocent person by the road or building. With cops having a huge amount of power in society, they might think that they are above the law.

To bring this issue into light we can share this information in social media to inform people. Make videos on what to do if you are pulled over so cops will have little chance to abuse their power. Let people be informed that not all cops are friendly and will try to find a way to arrest you. The second thing we can do is send a letter or a call to elected representatives such as city council, mayor senators, etc. to inform them of these tragic abusive problems from cops.

Participating in peaceful protest to inform the government on how cops aren’t doing as great of a job to protect civilians and the law. Being diverse in perspective, let the other talk about his side of the story and share it with the representatives or social media.

In conclusion, a minority of cops abuse their power and target innocent civilians for no reason. They abuse their power, think that they are above the law, and put people in danger instead of helping them out of danger. We need to change the police system because it is corrupted by people who abuse their power.
