The MSBA's New Lawyers Section Presents
"Custody Basics: Splitting the Baby"
Family Law is far more challenging than fighting over who gets the washcloths. Child Custody is often the only thing both parties genuinely find important. Custody, and the issues surrounding it, can determine where the child goes to school, which doctor he/she will see, and even whether the custodial parent can move across the border into Wisconsin. This CLE will discuss the basics of the custody laws in Minnesota and briefly walk the participants through some of the court services available to resolve this important emotional issue. Regardless of what type of law you’re in, this is valuable information every new lawyer will need at one point or another, if only to advise family, friends or when providing an overview and recommendation to a client.
Larry McGee practices in the areas of family law, representing clients in divorce, legal separation, custody, paternity, child support, third party custody, parenting time, and domestic abuse matters. While in law school, Mr. McGee was selected by the Honorable Peter A. Cahill to serve as his Judicial Law Clerk. Two years later, Mr. McGee was selected by Judge Karen A. Janisch to serve on her staff and has a combined total of almost five years in the Hennepin County courts, both in the family and criminal courts.
Prior to attending law school, Mr. McGee had a career in business and marketing, creating advertising for large corporations, such as Sears and Fingerhut. Mr. McGee then went on to start and lead his own advertising agency for many years.
Mr. McGee is a member of the MSBA New Lawyer’s section and is the Publications Co-Chair for the Family Law Section. His article about emergency ex parte motions is published in the Fall, 2012 edition of the Family Law Journal. Mr. McGee has also advocated for students as a member of two school boards, and has been on a Hennepin County citizen's task force, a volunteer instructor for the Boy Scouts, a youth athletic coach, a church education teacher and church board member, and a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. Mr. McGee also worked for five years as a Policy Aide to Hennepin County Commissioner Penny Steele.
Mr. McGee has the training, experience, and a genuine passion to ensure his clients reach a resolution, whether at the bargaining table or in the courtroom. Mr. McGee is also experienced as a business owner with the skills and knowledge to assist his clients with intricate financial matters.
