Other Section Accomplishments
The Appellate Practice Section held 9 CLEs in the 2012-2013 year.  We had very positive feedback for each CLE as being informative, interesting, and very affordable.  In addition to the CLEs listed above, the Section co-hosted events for Justice Anderson and new Justices and Judges.  Throughout the month of June, our Section members participated in the Nine Days in June and co-presented with justices of the Minnesota Supreme Court and judges of the Court of Appeals in the 10 judicial districts. The Section is planning an August quarterly lunch CLE discussing recent a U.S. Supreme Court decision.

The Section also worked hard to reach out to members who practice in public realms by keeping the CLE prices as affordable as possible and having topics that would specifically interest public attorneys.  The Section continued to recruit future members by holding quarterly CLE at the Judicial Center and actively reaching out to current law appellate clerks—the best target audience for the Appellate Section—to attend and participate in Section functions.

The Section has also been active in weighing in on various positions that the MSBA has been asked to take.  After lively debates, the Section took positions on two topics that were submitted to the MSBA for consideration (one issue was before the Minnesota Supreme Court and one in the legislature).  On both issues, the Appellate Section’s positions were adopted by the MSBA.

The Section has also been diligently updating the website with materials for our members regarding appellate strategies and formats.  Members have appreciated these materials being made available to assist on appeals.

Finally, the Appellate Practice Section continued the tradition of offering pro bono appellate opportunities to Section members through three programs: (1) asylum appeals; (2) unemployment compensation appeals; and (3) public defender appeals.  We offered a half day training program for the unemployment compensation appellate program in September that was well attended and received.  This fall the Section will offer a training program for the public defender appellate pro bono program.  The following year, we will return to asylum appeals and continue the training programs on a three year rotation.  As a result of our pro bono programs, the Section has been able to assist clients with much needed services and offer our members appellate opportunities that may not otherwise be available to them.
