Danielle Shelton Walczak is new MSBA Director of Diversity and Inclusion

The MSBA announces the hiring of Danielle Shelton Walczak as its Director of Diversity and Inclusion.  This is a new position within the MSBA.

Ms. Shelton Walczak is a former litigation attorney in private practice.  She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Colgate University and a Juris Doctorate from William Mitchell College of Law where she was a Law Review Member. Upon graduation she became a Hennepin County District Court Law Clerk.  She then began working as an Associate Attorney at Blackwell Igbanugo Engen & Saffold, currently Blackwell Burke, PA, a corporate defense litigation firm. While there she worked primarily in the areas of class action litigation with an emphasis on discrimination claims made by African-American farmers against the United States Department of Agriculture. She then continued her work on the USDA litigation with the firm of Saffold & Behrenbrinker.

It was at this time that she became more involved in access issues for indigent people to legal services and those issues affecting attorneys within their own profession. Therefore, in approximately 2002 she became an active member of the Volunteer Lawyer's Network, Ramsey County Court-Appointed Counsel, and the Women in the Legal Profession and Diversity Committees of the Minnesota Bar Association for nearly a decade.

In 2005 Danielle opened her own law office. Her primary practice was in the area of family law litigation. It was also during this time that she became a contract Hennepin County Family Court Public Defender. Wanting to impart her legal knowledge to new generations of attorneys, she served as an Adjunct Law Professor at her alma mater until 2008.   In an effort to seek new avenues to affect positive change in her immediate community and at large, Danielle served on the Diversity Committee of the United States Tennis Association from 2011-2012. Also in 2011 she was appointed by Mayor R.T. Rybak to the Minneapolis Commission on Civil Rights where she still serves as a member and Chair of the Standards and Procedures Committee. In 2013 Danielle officially closed her law office to devote her primary time and expertise to the greater good, and to that end she became Director of Diversity and Inclusion for the MSBA.
